Say hello to the Chemex, the brewer that’s been winning hearts since 1941! With its gorgeous design, it’s as much a piece of art as it is a coffee maker. Enjoy a smooth, clean cup that highlights rich flavors.

Coffee Essentials:

8 Cup Chemex
Chemex Filter
Grinder
42g (6 tablespoons) of coffee
Hot water just off the boil (approximately 205°F)
Scale
Timer
Stir stick
Your favorite Mug

Heat Things Up

Start by placing the Chemex filter in the brewer, making sure the single fold is facing away from the spout and the multiple folds are snug against it. Give the filter a warm shower with hot water to create a perfect seal and discard any paper taste. Don’t forget to dump that rinse water! Fold the filter back toward the spout to give it some extra love.

Weigh and Grind

Grab 42g (about 6 tablespoons) of coffee and grind it to a texture that’s reminiscent of kosher salt. Center those grounds in your Chemex and reset your scale to zero—let’s make this brew perfect!

Soak It Up

As soon as you pour hot water over the coffee, hit that timer! Pour until all the grounds are soaked or you hit about 150g. Grab a chopstick or spoon and give it a gentle stir to ensure no dry clumps are lurking around.

Pour It On

At the 45 second mark, it’s time for the second pour! Gently wiggle the water over the coffee, then spiral it around until you reach about 450g just below the rim. Focus on those dark spots; they need some extra love!

Top It Off

At 1 minute and 45 seconds, fill that brewer all the way to the top with approximately 700g of water.

Time to Brew

By the 4-minute mark, you should be close to the magic volume. Check the glass bubble (or “belly button”) for the 20oz indicator. Lift the filter and hover for a second to ensure you’ve got enough brew, then pull it out completely and let it drain into the sink.
