Grind and Dose
Alright, let’s get started! First, take the portafilter out of your espresso machine and give it a good wipe to make sure it’s clean and dry. Now, it’s time to grind! Set your scale to zero and grind about 19.5g of coffee to a fluffy consistency, kind of like confectioner’s sugar. Pour it directly into the portafilter, give it a gentle tap to settle the grounds, and then use your finger to spread them out evenly. When you tamp, you want to feel a little resistance like the coffee is pushing back at you. And make sure your coffee bed is level!
Heat Things Up
Next up, let’s get the machine ready. Purge some water through the group head to warm everything up. Once it’s nice and hot, lock the portafilter back into place.
Pull a Shot
Now for the fun part! Engage the group head and start your timer. Place a cup under the portafilter and watch as the espresso flows out. You’re aiming for a steady stream. The whole extraction should take about 23-28 seconds to brew around 1.5 ounces of espresso. If it’s taking too long, try a coarser grind. If it’s coming out too quickly, go for a finer grind.
Cheers!
You did it! Pour the espresso into your favorite cup and take a moment to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
